Surfacing Playwrights Festival

I didn't know I was so out of practice.

The auditions for the Surfacing Playwrights Festival (SURFACING) were Thursday night at the University Center. Got in touch with Kristen and Lar, but Kristen couldn't come try out, and Lar never called me back.

SURFACING is basically a group of plays that are chosen out of several submitted by students. The best ones are picked, and then performed by cast members that are NOT from the Conservatory. However they are from just about anyone else. (The Conservatory program at Webster has an agreement the forbids the budding actors from experiencing outside jobs. Wouldn't want to taint their development.) I'd missed the last two years of auditions. No way I was going to miss this one.

I was the first to get an audition sheet. For some odd reason, I couldn't remember the names of all the plays I'd been involved in... there were just so many. None of them were major, really. But... It took about three phone calls before I had them all down. I couldn't remember the names for the directors of Family Musical Theatre, so I called Dad. I couldn't remember my part in If These Walls Could Talk, so I called Tarrith. Then I called Dad again just to be sure.

By the time I had it all filled out, I was deeply entrenched in the line of people waiting to audition. People had gone before me... and people would come after. The nervousness hit me like a mack truck. I got to watch someone do a much more impressive job at one of the cold reading stations than I did. I read for some male parts. But, the part that bothered me the most, was that I forgot how to project at first.

This is the final straw. I'm getting involved in community theatre again. Stat.

Who's with me?
